I would like to find out details on use cases for network automation, especially in the context of configuration and change management. Please vote and ideally, leave a comment.

Code / Patch Management
What is everyone doing for code / patch management? My original thought was to use Solarwinds to push the code and track it that way, but since Solarwinds doesn't seem to handle stacks that well and I have lots of stacked switches, that doesn't really work for me.
Config Backup Failure alert only for nodes in Group
All,
I've been trying to figure out how to create an alert for NCM config backup failures only for nodes in a group I created.
I've created a custom property and assigned it to the group, and I can alert on the nodes status if its a member of the group, but can't figure out how to use that in conjunction with the NCM Audit alerts that a config job failed.
Does anyone have a solution to creating an alert for "Download Config requested by job failed" but only apply it to nodes contained in my group?
Appreciate any direction or suggestions on how to accomplish this.
thanks,
SteveT
Regex expressions for sting matching
Hello,
I'm new to regex and solarwinds. I'm trying to come up with a policy rule that checks GigabitEthernet0/2 - 0/45 for the command "switchport mode trunk" and alert me if it finds it on any of those specified ports.
I have been unable to get anything to work. The best I've gotten is
interface GigabitEthernet0\/([2-9]$|[1-3][0-9]$|4[0-5])\n\s*\S+\s\S+\s\S+\s\S+\n\s*switchport mode trunk
This finds the interface line for the specified ports, skips the next line, and then checks the switchport mode line for trunk vs access.
interface GigabitEthernet0/44
switchport access vlan 20
switchport mode access
switchport voice vlan 40
spanning-tree portfast edge
spanning-tree bpduguard enable
Solarwinds searches the config (I made sure the downloaded config was current first) and says this:
Below is a screenshot of my rule in solarwinds:
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Drew
Using AD credentials passthrough for connection profiles
Hi all,
Is it possible to use the logged in AD credentials a user has to get on solarwinds as a connection profile without manually entering the username and password each time a different user logs in. In other words can it pass through the credentials from AD login to a connection profile or in place of connection profiles?
Thanks

Config Change Templates based on variable
is there a way to parameterize a variable on the Configuration change template to update configuration on devices based on certain criteria?
Eg: based on Location, name server has to be parameterized for the devices?
Overall Running vs. Startup Config Conflicts
I've tried to understand those NCM main page graphs like "Overall Running vs. Startup Config Conflicts" and "Overall Configuration Changes Snapshot". What means the state "unknown"? I have nearly 100% of devices as unknown, as the matter of fact, they have always been like that! Not very much usefull information... I don't understand what is the meaning of possible state "unknown". Configs have the conflict of they don't have it, simple! Yeah, I understand that if system doesn't see the situation for some reason, it puts it as unknown. But if my every backup scripts are working fine, and everything else in NCM seems to be ok, why these reports are showing unknown? What should I change to make it show the real situation?
Problems with firmware repository (unable to connect to polling engine)
We have been having one heck of a time trying to get the firmware repository setup for NCM. We have one polling engine that is throwing an "unable to connect to polling engine" error every time we try to set this up. We opened a ticket with SolarWinds but they ultimately stated that this storage location has to be accessible from ALL polling engines (and then closed their support ticket). This is a bad design. At any rate, this particular engine being referenced is one related to PCI compliance so our first thought was that something on the network side was preventing access, but that's simply not the case. We can physically access the file server (storage location) from the polling engine itself, it's only when we use the web console to set the storage location that NCM thinks it can't. Does the primary polling engine reach out to the APE's to verify access? If so, there may be something between the primary engine and this APE that is being referenced...
Has anyone else seen this before? I'm open to any ideas or suggestions anyone may have.
NCM - Remove Windows servers and PCs NCM licensed
Hi,
I'm new in NCM. We backup our switch configurations. I had few hundreds of PC/Serveurs licensed with NCM, but there's no config taken from them.
I remove them all and the day after I had some of them come back NCM licensed. I see that we have a Network Sonar Discovery that scan a vlan where service PC (always on and monitored).
How can I remove them from NCM in the discovery?
Thanks
Configuration download archive
Hello -
I am trying to find a way to download the running configurations on all devices on a quarterly basis for our security team to review. Now we currently backup the configurations every night, but the process of picking through the folder to copy the current running configuration is time consuming.
I was hoping that someone could tell me how I could get a quarterly configuration download of the running configuration on all devices and put them in a folder other then the configuration archive.
Any ideas?
running slow NCM 7.8
We have recently migrated from NCM 7.7 to NCM 7.8.
The Config Backup Jobs are running extremely slow. In NCM 7.7, it used to complete in less than 3 hours and with NCM 7.8 , it takes 18 hours !!
Has anyone experience this slowness ??
Best way to monitor/alert on an internally hosted web address?
Hello all, thank you for taking the time to read this post/question.
What would be the most effective way to monitor if an internally hosted web address is functioning correctly? The two servers that host the app are load balanced on our F5. Would monitoring the IIS services on both servers be the best route? Or just straight TCP port 80 availability? Any information or suggestions would be appreciated, thanks!
NCM and SCP
Anyone know how to verify NCM is backing up configs using the SCP server vs TFTP? I've configured it and the job seems to be completing, but I'd like some evidence it is using the correct one.

Avaya switches and NCM
Hello everyone,
I've recently installed the trial version of NCM to confirm it plays nicely with an Avaya environment before committing to the purchase. I've added a few nodes for testing purposes and I've been trying to perform a backup of the configuration as this is my primary reason for wanting NCM. I'm having issues with connecting to the switches and I believe it's something to do with the Connection Profile settings. It's that, or the issue maybe that with Avaya switches, once connected over Telnet/SSH you need to press CTRL+Y to receive a prompt asking for logon credentials. You can then login and you then need to press ENTER to receive your first prompt. I THINK NCM is just trying to input credentials and is timing out.
My question is this, how do I configure NCM so that it sends the following commands:
1: CTRL+Y
2: Logon credentials
3: ENTER
4: any other commands such as Show run, show version etc.
Any help here will be greatly appreciated. I've had success with this community in the past and I look forward to the discussion.
C:\TFTP on Orion AWS EC2
Hello
1 million "Thank You" to the person who will take a stab at answering my question.
We have our new Orion installed on an EC2 instance in AWS. How do I get the IOS device images to C:\TFTP?
Also, how do I get the NCM templates installed on the Orion EC2 instance in AWS? I'm using these instructions but the templates seems to be missing: Cisco IOS upgrade Template for TFTP, SCP, or FTP (Legacy)
Respectfully,
Matt

Solarwinds NCM Bulk Password Change Best Practices
We are investigating Solarwinds NCM to perform bulk password changes for our network devices.
Can anyone direct me to a blog post, discussion, support article, etc. with best practices for this use case? Also, please let me know your detailed thoughts about using Solarwinds NCM Config Change Templates, Compliance (Report, Policy, & Rule) and/or Jobs for this use case. The Compliance (Report, Policy, & Rule - with remediation script) seems like the incorrect feature since rules are based on the presence of a string in the configuration which the trigger for a remediation script. However, a Config Change Template is triggered to execute by an user.
It may be helpful to share that I am somewhat new to using Solarwinds NCM. As a proof of concept, a couple of scripts using Config Change Templates have been created that seem to work fine on a couple of network device types. The desired result is to create a process for our operations team to be able to change the password for compliance reasons.
